Returns Local Crime Indexes

Risks 'Crime' service returns the crime indexes which is likelihood of different types of crime happening at or around a particular location. The specific 11 crime variables measured are:

  • Overall Crime (a composite measure based on all crime types)
  • Violent Crime Score
    • Murder
    • Rape
    • Robery
    • Aggravated Assault
  • Property Crime Score
    • Burglary
    • Larceny-Theft
    • Motor Vehicle Theft
    • Arson

Each crime variable includes a numerical score, where higher values denote the increased likelihood of criminal activity, and a qualitative categorization that helps explain the numerical crime score probability. This set of variables (crime scores and qualitative categories) has been bundled with Block Group boundaries to create the crimeindex.

Violent crime is composed of the following 4 offenses:

  • Murder (and Non-Negligent Manslaughter): The willful (non-negligent) killing one human being by another.
  • Rape: Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.
  • Robbery: The taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.
  • Aggravated Assault: An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury.

Property crime includes the offenses of:

  • Burglary: The unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or a theft. To classify an offense as a burglary, the use of force to gain entry need not have occurred.
  • Larceny-theft: The unlawful, taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another.
  • Motor Vehicle Theft: Motor vehicle theft is defined as the theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
  • Arson: As any willful or malicious burning or attempting to burn, with or without attempt to defraud, a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal proper of another, and other such cases.
